Morgan Co., GA
1830 Census -
p. 259 - District #282 -
John WHITEKER - males: 1 (50-60) [John]
females: 2 (15-20) [? and ?]; 1 (50-60) [wife Polly]
[Daniel WHITAKER was in Coweta Co. (p. 385), John HARDEGREE in Clarke Co. (p. 304) and Littlebery WHITEKER in Newton Co. (p. 38). There is also a John WHITTAKER in Early Co. (age 30-40, p. 96) and Walton Co. (age 40-50, p. 133). A deed made in Coweta Co. on 19 Jan 1829 between Ganaway Conner and John WHITAKER, both of Walton Co., in which WHITAKER paid Conner $150 for the 202-1/2 acres in the 3rd District of Coweta Co. Recorded 27 Jun 1829. [__:252] This source seems to suggest that the John WHITAKER of Walton Co. might be the same one as John Jr. of Morgan Co. who could have moved to Walton Co. Further research needed.]
1830 Tax Digest - John WHITAKER of Capt. Martin's District and District 20 was listed with 101-1/4 acres in Morgan Co. on Hardlabour Creek and one white poll. [p. 53]
1832 Tax Digest - John WHITAKER of Capt. Lane's District and District 20 was listed with 101-1/4 acres in Morgan Co. on Hardlaber Creek with no white poll. [p. 49] [This is the last listing of John WHITAKER on Morgan Co. tax digests after 1832 up to 1836. He either died or moved away. This was also the first time he did not have to pay a white poll tax. He would be in his 50s to 60s.]
----------
Starting in 1830 we find records on Daniel WHITAKER in Coweta Co. and Heard Co.
The 1840 GA census shows the following WHITAKERs in Heard Co.: L. B. (20-30), Daniel (40-50), Pleasant H. (20-30), Jane (50-60) and James M. (20-30) [pp. 290, 291, 307, 308] According to Mildred D. Davidson, Jane was the widow of Abraham WHITAKER of Wilkes Co., GA and James was her son. John HARDEGREE was in Coweta Co. and his family eventually moved to east Texas circa 1847. Our John WHITAKER or his wife has not been found on this census so it is possible that they were both deceased by then.
The 1850 Heard Co., GA census shows these WHITAKERs with their families: Littlebury (40 GA), Pleasant H. (40 GA), Daniel (54 SC), Jane (52 VA) with her son James M. (34 VA), and Thomas (31 GA) [pp. 135A, 142A, 162A, 165B-166A]. According to Mildred D. Davidson, Thomas was a son of Abraham and Jane WHITAKER of Wilkes Co., GA. One wonders if he may have been confused by Mrs. Clyde Hunt in her letter mentioned in the Our Children's Ancestry (p. 105) as a brother of Pleasant and Berry. Thomas has not been mentioned on any of the tax digests for Morgan Co. and does not fit in as a young son on the 1830 Morgan Co., GA in John's household. The 1824 Morgan Co. tax digest listed an Abraham WHITICAR. Could this be the same one as Abraham WHITAKER of Wilkes Co.?
While the above information does not provide clues to the parents of John WHITAKER or his wife Polly HOLLOWAY, it does show that he had land in Baldwin Co., GA, which eventually was in Morgan Co. There are several other WHITAKER families in Baldwin Co. that were related to WHITAKERs in Washington Co., GA and Wilkes Co., GA, and were previous residents of Washington Co. This MIGHT indicate that our John was also related to the Baldwin Co., Washington Co. and Wilkes Co. WHITAKERs.
